Interview with Wendy Piersall

Published Date Author: admin, December 1st, 2007

I’m working on building some Squidoo lenses for Wendy Piersall, founder of eMomsatHome.com. eMoms at Home is the best online magazine for work at home parents – I know I have learned so much there!

So I was exploring the internet for information that I would like to include in the Squidoo lenses, and I found this great interview with Wendy by Brad Baldwin. They were at a conference together in Utah when they sat down to have this talk.

I really liked this interview – it was the perfect length (not too long and not too short) and just gives us as viewers the perfect peek into Wendy’s online world and paints a picture of the successes she has achieved and continues to achieve with eMoms.

Just click here to see the video:

(I tried to embed the video here, but, it just was not working!)

The really cool thing about eMoms recently is that Wendy has expanded it to include multiple content channels! When you go to the main page (eMomsatHome.com), you will see the channels at the top of the page. Another cool thing is that there are lots of dads involved in the community over there, one of whom, Derek, is in charge of one of the content channels. There are lots of dads working at home, too, and it’s great to have them involved in what have typically been WAHM communities. I love getting the male perspective on all things work at home.

You know what I think it is? What I think is happening? The internet marketing community has been predominantly male in years past – and the WAHM community, has obviously been predominantly female. (Yes, I even have to say predominantly there, because, I know of at least one dad, in particular, who has been involved with WAHM’s for a number of years.)

And what I’ve seen happening over the last, maybe, two to three years – is these worlds colliding, overlapping, and best of all, gaining valuable insight and knowledge from each other! It has been so exciting to watch. The best of WAHM’s and the best of male Internet Marketers collaborating and creating a whole new community – that of the Work At Home Parent!

And Wendy definitely has her finger on the pulse of that! If you are looking to break into the online world of business, or expand your knowledge of online business – Wendy’s online magazine is the place to be!

Lisa,

I find it funny how in some realms of the internet you hear about how it’s so male-dominated, while other talk about how it’s so female-dominated. I suppose it depends on what your particular interests are. Also:

I know of at least one dad, in particular, who has been involved with WAHM’s for a number of years

Do their husbands know? ;-) Just kidding!

You silly thing – that’s exactly the thought I had after I typed it! Haha! I thought maybe I should qualify it, but, then I decided to let it go! :D

That is interesting about the male/female dominance thing – I think maybe we don’t realize how segmented the internet really is – like we think we’re all visiting the same ‘neighborhoods’ all the time, you know? When really – I could spend my whole day going places online you’d never even heard of, and vice versa. And maybe that is some of it, too!

Now get your mind out of the gutter, missy! ;)

Lisa, I think you’re right in that there are so many different corners and areas of the Interweb that many of us can likely surf for months and never once cross paths. Naturally the sites you visit and the experiences you have influence your thoughts on things such as male/female dominated markets among many others.

I’ve mentioned a few times on Dad Balance how there seem to be many more books written for women trying to balance work and family than there are for men. However, women can make the same statement about many other topics. It all depends on your perspective and interests.

But I really like your distinction of the WAHP community, as I believe much of the information on working from home can be of benefit whether you are a WAHM or WAHD. Not only that but I believe that WAHD’s can learn a great deal from WAHM’s and vice versa.

I totally agree that we can learn a lot from each other and I am thoroughly enjoying the melding of the worlds – men and women, WAHM and internet marketer! About five years ago, I had so much fun dabbling in both worlds, but, to see them come together as they have has been really cool!

The internet, and even the blogosphere, is actually very segmented. I tend to read blogs on a few specific topics: the environment, writing, personal development, and entrepreneurship. Each of these areas has its own community with major and minor players, and they don’t really overlap at all. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our little section of the internet that we forget there are thousands of other topics out there. If my interests included automobiles or collecting ’80s toys, I have no doubt there would be a whole new corner of the internet for me to explore!

I know, it’s like it’s own world, the internet – with towns, cities, neighborhoods!! I guess just like with the earth – we forget how big it really is!

I do think they overlap, though, and sometimes in ways I’d never expect! I’ll run into someone in ‘another neighborhood’ – that I never expected to see them in – it’s such an odd and funny feeling – like running into your teacher in the grocery store! Ha!
